blowtorch.jpgI am at home when I am nestled in art. Visual expression is my haven. A place where beauty and ugliness can reside side by side. Where the sacred can be gently actualized with a quiet, reverent whisper of a brush. Visual expression is also a place where rage, hurt, and grief can scream and erupt and be given a voice. Joy can explode with abundance, color, movement, simply the act of creation. In creativity, all things are possible. There is no place for silence. Emotions emerge from hidden corners. Revelations are exposed. Internal energies erupt and all feelings become expressible. My art offers me a deep sanctuary to express profound experiences that often cannot be articulated in any other way.

My heart races when I can explore new media. My roots are in traditional classics — oils, pastels, acrylics, etchings, serigraphs, encaustics, woodblock printing, carvings, ceramics, and also, digital media. My years of practice in commercial design compels me to produce multiples — limited editions to share. Often to express myself I construct or collage media with less traditional materials, including metals, foraged scraps, synthetics, and fragments of personal treasures.

Each medium and its processes are evocative of the mood of the artwork. Chalk pastels reflect the physical energy of creation — from staccato-frenzy to soft, soothing strokes. The exacting nature of my serigraphs and etchings allows for a precise articulation of expression. The assemblages are a result of both destruction and building, giving a visual voice to things that remain unspeakable. My artwork, like each of our lives, spans the breadth of emotions — the darkness to the beauty —that we live and experience each moment. It is not always pretty, but it is real.
